Downhill
all the way
Two
nights accommodation, hire of mountain bike, lock helmet.
Rendezvous
at highest road point in the Mournes on first day of the
visit and at the highest road point of Slieve Croob on the
second day of the visit. Cycle back down into Newcastle
at your leisure with a minimum of uphill cycling.
From
the rendezvous point in the Mournes you can either cycle
north directly back into Newcastle with stupendous views
of Co Down and Dundrum Bay ahead stopping off at the visitor
amenity sites on the way for a cup of coffee and take a
diversion through Tollymore Forest Park. Alternatively cycle
south to complete a circuit of the Mournes either via a
stop at the Silent Valley and along the Head Road or extending
the return by dropping down into Kilkeel and returning along
the Coast Road and the pretty village of Annalong.
From
Slieve Croob where it is said you can see five of the six
counties of Northern Ireland, cycle east towards Newcastle
along quiet country roads with one of the best views in
Ireland ahead of you all the time. Take time out to drop
into Castlewellan Forest Park, perhaps complete a circuit
of the lake before continuing back into Newcastle, maybe
visiting Maghera Old Church on the way.
The
Mourne rendezvous points can be reached by Mourne Rambler
Bus at a cost of £2.60 during July and August or at
other times by local Taxi service at a cost of £4.00
each which is the only way to reach Slieve Croob meeting
point at a cost of £6 (based on 2 persons).
